When creating maps with data from different sources, one of the first things to do is to standardize the names of the countries, as they may come in different languages and with different denominations.
In order to have a standardized database of country names, we have chosen to use the GeoNames database, creating our own table with standard ISO codes, as well as other data that may be necessary.
